CAP CORSE- BASTIA-THE NEBBIO. A coast road built by Napoleon III skirts the the rugged cliffs of the CAP CORSE promontory. It's fishing villages and tiny ports seemed tucked gently into sloping river mouths and the inland slopes, occupied by vineyards, remain something to be discovered. The NEBBIO region is backed by a wall of granite mountains, overlooking undulating vineyards that tumble into the deep blue sea. PATRIMONIO, home of the first Corsican wine to gain appellation controlée status. BASTIA, the island's most successful commercial town, has the charm of Terra Vecchia, with its flamboyant Baroque churches and Terra Nova, the historic district. |

BALAGNE. CALVI, the Balagne's largest town is also one the most attractive with its medieval citadel sitting majestically on a stark granite promontory. The hinterland is a glorious landscape with it's old fortress villages on hilltops. The Désert des Agriates, a vast rocky moonscape with clumps of cacti and maquis-shrouded hills leads you to ILE ROUSSE, developed by Pascale Paoli and now a very popular summer resort. |

CASTAGNICCIA - CORTE - EAST COAST. The CASTAGNICCIA region takes it's name from the dense forests of chestnuts first cultivated by the Genoese in the fifteenth century. CORTE stacked up the side of a wedge-shaped crag, against a spectacular backdrop of granite mountains, capsules the essence of the Corsican soul. On the east coast is ALERIA, the capital during the Roman era, where you can find very interesting Roman ruins and a Genoese fortress. A little further on, the Etang de Diana, formerly the Roman harbor, now holds oyster farms. |

AJACCIO - PORTO. AJACCIO, capital of Corsica and Napoleon's home town has an encompassing view of it's glorious bay. It has a cluster of ancient streets that form the core of the old town which opens out to the seafront by the port. Further north is CARGESE, sitting high above a deep blue bay on a cliff. The tormented rock formations of the PIANA "Calanche" is worth a stop. PORTO, on the Golfe de Porto is famed for the corroded beauty of its crimson granite cliffs. |

ALTA ROCCA - SARTENE. The ALTA ROCCA region is well know for it's prehistoric sites (Filitosa, Cauria, Fontanaccia). SARTENE, home of the Catenacciu, (Good Friday procession), Corsica's oldest religious traditions, has a well preserved medieval "vieille ville." The view of "Les aiguilles de BAVELLA" and amazing panorama of pink pinnacles, is a must when visiting this region.. |

BONIFACIO, THE EXTREME SOUTH. BONIFACIO, at the southernmost point of the island is a narrow peninsula of dazzling white cliffs with a town site unlike any other in Europe. Separated from Sardinia by a 17 km strait and the nature reserve of the Iles de Lavezzi, BONIFACIO is worth looking at from the sea. PORTO-VECCHIO, the most popular harbors in Corsica, offers spectacular beaches. |
